15 Fun Facts About Japan

Japan is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, cutting-edge technology, and stunning natural landscapes. It’s my favourite country in the world to visit and I have written over 70 guides to Japan which there is a link to at the end of this post.

Facts About Japan

With a history spanning thousands of years, Japan seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern innovation, creating a unique and fascinating society. From the bustling streets of Tokyo, the world’s most populous metropolis, to the serene temples of Kyoto, Japan offers a diverse array of experiences.

Known for its exquisite cuisine, pioneering advancements in robotics, and the world-famous cherry blossom season, Japan will captivate and inspire you.

Vending Machines Everywhere

Japan has the highest density of vending machines in the world, with one for every 23 people. They sell everything from beverages and snacks to umbrellas and even fresh eggs.

You will always have access to easy snacks and drinks wherever you are and on a personal note, I always love grabbing an easy Sapporo beer from them when out and about in cities walking.

Tokyo’s Population

Tokyo, the capital city, is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world, with over 37 million residents in the Greater Tokyo Area.

Yes, Tokyo is massive! It’s one of the best cities in the world if a massive metropolis to explore is your kind of thing (it is mine).

Shinto and Buddhism

The two main religions in Japan are Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto, an indigenous religion, focuses on rituals and the worship of kami (spirits), while Buddhism, which arrived from China and Korea, emphasizes meditation and the afterlife.

There are so many temples and shrines to visit in Japan and it is a cultural highlight of any visit. Kyoto and Nara in particular are the best destinations for lots of old temples to see when there, although you will find many spread out across all cities and around the countryside.

Unique Rail System

Japan’s rail system is one of the most efficient and punctual in the world. The Shinkansen, or bullet train, can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h (200 mph) and have an average delay of less than a minute.

The Shinkansen is the perfect way for long-distance journeys to get between cities, for example Tokyo to Osaka. If you plan to use the Shinkansen trains a lot when visiting then a Japan Rail Pass (get one with that link) may be worth looking into to save money.

Cherry Blossom Festival

Hanami, the cherry blossom festival, is a significant cultural event where people gather to admire the blooming sakura (cherry blossoms) and have picnics under the trees.

Seriously, if you get the chance for just one time of year to visit Japan then make it in spring if you can from March to April when it is the cherry blossom season. I witnessed the cherry blossom season in Hokkaido when visiting friends there.

Sumo Wrestling

Sumo is Japan’s national sport and has a history dating back over 1,500 years. Sumo wrestlers, or rikishi, follow strict traditions and rituals.

If you are lucky and are in Japan during the sumo wrestling season be sure to watch a match. It’s not just to see a traditional sport but is also highly entertaining. I just wish I had had a few more beers before I went in!

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest peak at 3,776 meters (12,389 feet) and is an active stratovolcano. It is a popular destination for climbers and tourists and is considered a sacred mountain.

Although I have been past Mount Fuji I did not climb it as was bad weather. However, the view is impressive by itself.

Longest Life Expectancy

Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, with an average of around 84 years. This longevity is attributed to a healthy diet, an active lifestyle, and an excellent healthcare system.

In fact, on the island of Okinawa in the south there is a community that has some of the longest life expectancies in the world.

Innovation and Technology

Japan is a global leader in technology and innovation, known for brands like Sony, Toyota, and Nintendo. It’s also home to advanced robotics and cutting-edge electronics.

When in Tokyo you can see a lot of this tech on display in many areas. Akihabara is a great place for modern gaming for example.

Japan is an archipelago consisting of 6,852 islands, with the four largest being Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. There is so much to explore in Japan with many different varieties of terrain and climate.

From the warmth of Okinawa in the south to the cool temperatures of Hokkaido in the north.

Hot Springs (Onsen)

Japan is home to thousands of hot springs, known as onsen. These are popular for relaxation and are often found in scenic locations. Relaxing in an onsen is one of the best experiences that I have enjoyed on every trip to Japan.

Out of all these facts about Japan, this is one of my favourites. You can read my post on the best onsens in Japan to visit.

Japan hosts numerous unique festivals throughout the year, such as the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, the Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori, and the Tanabata Festival, which celebrates the meeting of star-crossed lovers.

One of my personal favourites is the traditional festival Kasuga Wakamiya On – Matsuri held in Nara.

The World’s Oldest Company

Kongo Gumi, a construction company, was founded in 578 AD and operated continuously until 2006, making it the oldest company in the world for over 1,400 years.

This is just a fun fact about Japan but it is obviously not useful for any visit to the country.
