Despite being one of Southeast Asia’s smaller capital cities, there are several good things to do in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. From exploring ancient temples and strolling through bustling markets to indulging in delectable local cuisine and unwinding by the riverside.
Things To Do In Vientiane
Nestled along the serene banks of the Mekong River Vientiane exudes an irresistible charm that seamlessly blends colonial-era architecture with Buddhist temples and a laid-back atmosphere.
I spent one week in the city while waiting for a Thai visa and explored around and these are some of the best things to do in Vientiane when there that I found to do.

Explore The Old Town
Vientiane’s Old Town is a charming district steeped in history and culture, offering you a glimpse into the city’s past. This area is characterized by its quaint streets lined with colonial-era buildings, Buddhist temples, and traditional Lao architecture.
Strolling through the narrow alleys of Old Town, you can discover hidden gems such as the iconic Wat Si Saket, known for its thousands of Buddha statues.
Additionally, the Old Town is home to a variety of charming cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses, making it the perfect place to relax and soak in the laid-back ambience of Vientiane.
Being a coffee drinker I checked out several cafes when there and the best coffee in Vientiane I found was at Le Trio Coffee cafe in the old town.
The Old Town also features bustling markets where locals and tourists alike gather to shop for handicrafts, souvenirs, and fresh produce. Be sure to try some French bread and pastries at a quaint cafe.
Whether you’re exploring its historic landmarks, browsing its vibrant markets, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along its picturesque streets, Vientiane’s Old Town offers a captivating blend of culture, history, and charm.
Sunset By The Mekong River
Take a relaxed stroll along the promenade by the Mekong River at sunset. This was my favourite thing to do in the evening as locals and tourists go for a gentle stroll along the waterfront to watch the sunset.
Whether you choose to enjoy the sunset from one of the riverside cafes or simply find a quiet spot along the promenade, as darkness falls and the city lights begin to twinkle in the distance, the magic of Vientiane by the Mekong River truly comes alive.
As soon as the sun goes down take a look at the night market by the promenade where you will find lots of souvenirs and other items for sale. Meanwhile, by the waterfront, many restaurants and bars open up and a real buzzing nightlife scene starts up.
Visit Wat Si Muang
There are plenty of Buddhist temples to explore in Vientiane but my favourite is Wat Si Muang.
Wat Si Muang is one of the most revered and significant Buddhist temples in Vientiane. This temple holds a special place in the hearts of the local people, who frequently visit to pay their respects, make offerings, and seek blessings for important life events.
Legend has it that Wat Si Muang was built in the 16th century on the site where a young pregnant woman named Si Muang sacrificed herself during the construction of the temple’s foundation. It is believed that her sacrifice helped ensure the successful completion of the temple, and she is revered as the guardian spirit of Vientiane.
The temple’s architecture reflects traditional Lao design, with intricate carvings, colourful murals, and gilded decorations adorning its structures.
Inside the temple, you can admire beautiful Buddha statues, elaborate altars, and sacred relics, while outside, the tranquil temple grounds provide a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city.
Whether you’re interested in history, religion, or simply seeking a moment of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of Vientiane, Wat Si Muang offers a captivating glimpse into the spiritual heart of Laos.
Visiting this temple and relaxing there was one of the best things to do in Vientiane that I did.
Check Out The Patuxai Victory Monument
The Patuxai Victory Monument, often referred to as the “Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane,” stands as a symbol of Laotian nationalism and independence. This grand monument, located in the heart of Vientiane, commemorates those who fought for Laos’ independence from French colonial rule.
Constructed between 1957 and 1968, the Patuxai Victory Monument is an impressive architectural feat, blending traditional Lao design elements with modern aesthetics. Its towering structure, adorned with intricate carvings and ornate decorations, commands attention from afar and serves as a prominent landmark in the city skyline.
The main reason I enjoyed this area though was watching the locals play around by a large water fountain by the monument.
Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan)
I’ll be totally honest here and say that I didn’t visit the Buddha Park in Vientiane myself, but it comes highly recommended if you have the time.
The Buddha Park, also known as Xieng Khuan, is a fascinating and surreal attraction located just outside of Vientiane. This extraordinary park is renowned for its collection of over 200 religious sculptures and statues, many of which depict figures from Buddhist and Hindu mythology.
Established in 1958 by the mystic and visionary Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, Buddha Park is a testament to his eclectic artistic vision and spiritual beliefs. The park’s centrepiece is a massive reclining Buddha statue, surrounded by towering sculptures of gods, demons, and animals, all intricately crafted from concrete and adorned with colourful mosaics.
