What is Thailand Famous For?
Personally, I have been coming to Thailand since my first backpacking trip there in 1998 and have spent several years living in Chiang Mai, Lopburi, and Bangkok. At the time of writing this article, I am still living in Thailand.
I always love to share “all things Thailand” so that everyone can learn more about the country. Whether you’re an adventurer, a foodie, or a beach lover, Thailand offers something for everyone.

Thailand boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. From the bustling shores of Patong Beach in Phuket to the tranquil sands of Railay Beach in Krabi, there’s a beach for every mood. The turquoise waters, soft sands, and stunning sunsets create a tropical paradise that keeps visitors coming back.
2. Mouthwatering Street Food
Thailand is a street food haven and is one of the best things about visiting the country. Wander through the night markets and feast on dishes like pad Thai, som tam (papaya salad), and mango sticky rice. Bangkok’s Chinatown and Chatuchak Market are iconic spots to indulge in authentic Thai flavours.
3. Temples and Buddhism

Thailand’s culinary reputation extends far beyond street food. Dishes like green curry, tom yum soup, and khao soi are beloved worldwide. Cooking classes in cities like Chiang Mai let you bring these flavours home.
8. The Grand Palace
The Grand Palace in Bangkok is a historic and cultural icon. Once the residence of Thai kings, this sprawling complex is a masterpiece of traditional Thai architecture and a must-visit for history buffs.
9. Festivals
Thailand’s festivals are vibrant and unforgettable. Songkran (Thai New Year) is a nationwide water fight and the biggest water fight in the world (seriously, so much fun)! At the same time, Loy Krathong sees floating lanterns illuminating rivers and skies in a breathtaking display.
10. Island Hopping
The Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are dotted with stunning islands. Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Tao each offer unique attractions, from diving spots to lush jungles.
11. Nightlife
Thailand’s nightlife is legendary. From rooftop bars in Bangkok to the infamous Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, the country knows how to entertain after sunset.
12. Shopping
Markets and malls in Thailand cater to every shopping desire. MBK Center and Chatuchak Weekend Market (my favourite market) in Bangkok offer everything from trendy fashion to quirky souvenirs.
13. Ancient Ruins
History enthusiasts will love exploring sites like Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, ancient capitals that showcase the grandeur of Thailand’s past through crumbling temples and statues. I enjoyed Sikhotthai more as there were less crowds.
14. Muay Thai
Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is the national sport. Catching a live match or even taking a class is a fantastic way to experience this intense and disciplined martial art. I learned some Muay Thai in Chiang Mai for several months and it was a unique cultural thing to do. I did it for fitness and cultural interests only as I’m too old for sparring!

15. National Parks
Thailand’s national parks, like Khao Sok and Doi Inthanon, are havens for nature lovers. They feature diverse wildlife, limestone cliffs, and scenic trekking routes. The coldest I have been in Thailand was in Doi Inthanon as Thailand’s highest peak is located there.

16. Smiling Hospitality
Thailand isn’t called the Land of Smiles for nothing. Thai people are known for their warmth and hospitality, making visitors feel welcome wherever they go.
17. Tuk-Tuks
Riding a tuk-tuk is an exhilarating way to navigate Thailand’s cities. These colourful, three-wheeled vehicles are a quintessential part of the Thai experience. Although not the best for all your transport options for getting around in towns and cities (taxis are better and cleaner) they are a lot of fun to experience for a few times.
18. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
Thailand offers world-class diving and snorkelling opportunities. Sites like the Similan Islands and Hin Daeng are teeming with vibrant marine life. Koh Tao is a great place to do a scuba diving course.
19. Affordable Luxury
Thailand provides excellent value for money. Luxurious accommodations, delicious meals, and unforgettable experiences come at a fraction of the cost compared to many other destinations.
20. Unique Culture
Thailand’s unique culture is a blend of tradition and modernity. From its royal ceremonies to contemporary art scenes, the country’s heritage is as rich as its future is promising.
