Travelling from Hoi An to Hue by train is a popular and scenic option in Vietnam. This is a general guide on how to make the journey yourself.
As you embark on this rail journey, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the coastline and countryside. The convenience of modern train travel, coupled with the charm of the Vietnamese scenery, makes the Hoi An to Hue train trip a great choice for both locals and tourists alike.
This is one of the best, albeit quite short, train journeys I did in Vietnam.
Hoi An To Hue
The train journey between Da Nang and Hue is renowned for its beautiful coastal scenery and landscapes, providing a unique and enjoyable travel experience.
One option you can do is do a very long day trip to Hue from Hoi An but you would have to start early and come back late to give you time to see the main site of the Citadel in Hue when there.
If you have the time it’s best to spend a night in Hue so you’re not rushing around.
Train Classes:
Trains in Vietnam offer different classes, including soft seat and hard seat. You won’t need any “sleeper” options as it’s a short journey.
Buying Train Tickets:
You can buy train tickets at the train station or through online platforms. Popular online platforms include the official website of Vietnam Railways and various travel agencies.
I use 12GoAsia to book train tickets and buses when travelling in Vietnam and Asia in general. You can check and book trains from Da Nang to Hue at 12GoAsia.
You can also book buses from Hoi An to Da Nang through 12GoAsia as well.
It’s advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel times.
Hoi An

Hoi An doesn’t have a train station, so you’ll need to travel to Da Nang first. Da Nang is the nearest city with a train station and is about 30 kilometres away from Hoi An.
You can take a bus, taxi, or private car to Da Nang. The journey takes around 30-45 minutes by car.
Da Nang To Hue Train

Personally, I didn’t like Da Nang that much and, especially if you are short on time, it is much better to focus on Hoi An and Hue.
Trains from Da Nang to Hue operate regularly, and the journey offers picturesque views of the coastline and countryside.
In Da Nang, the train station is conveniently located in the city centre. In Hue, the train station is also centrally located when you arrive.
The train journey from Da Nang to Hue takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
Hue

Once you arrive in Hue, you can easily find taxis or other local transportation to reach your final destination within the city.
This route from Hoi An to Hue by train and bus not only provides a comfortable mode of transportation but also unfolds the beauty of the region, creating lasting memories for those who choose to traverse this enchanting part of Vietnam by rail.
