Let’s start with what I’m talking about.
Before travelling to a new country, research its internet laws and regulations. Some countries have strict censorship policies that may limit access to certain websites, social media platforms, or online content.
Stay informed about any changes in internet censorship policies in the country you are visiting. Local news sources and online forums are valuable resources for staying up-to-date on current events and regulations.
Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
This may be an obvious option for most people out there but some people don’t know what a VPN is or how to use it.
A VPN can help bypass internet censorship by encrypting your internet connection and routing it through a server in another location which is a VPN IP address changer. This allows you to access content as if you were in a different country with more lenient censorship policies that have access to the sites you want to visit.
However, be aware that some countries may also restrict or monitor VPN usage. Many VPN services operate on a subscription model, where you pay a monthly or annual fee for access to their network of servers. There are also free VPNs available, but they may have limitations in terms of server locations, speed, and security features.
I use a paid-for service when travelling as you normally get faster speeds and more features.
A VPN is not just useful for avoiding internet censorship. When on public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in coffee shops or airports, you can be vulnerable to security threats. Using a VPN on public Wi-Fi encrypts your data, preventing potential eavesdroppers or hackers from intercepting sensitive information like login credentials.

Even if you use a VPN it’s also a good idea to download important content, maps, and information before arriving in a country with strict internet censorship to ensure that you have access to essential resources even if certain online services are unavailable.

While in a country with strict internet censorship, exercise caution when engaging in online activities. Avoid posting or sharing content that may be considered sensitive or politically controversial, as this could lead to legal consequences.
Remember that you are a guest in the country you are visiting, and it’s important to respect local customs and laws. Familiarize yourself with the cultural and legal norms related to internet usage.
Worse Countries With Internet Censorship
There are quite a few countries that have some form of internet censorship or the other but some are way worse than others.
These are just a few of the worst countries for internet censorship where you will have to use a VPN when visiting to access certain websites.
China
China is known for its extensive and sophisticated internet censorship system, often referred to as the Great Firewall of China. The government monitors and restricts access to various websites and online services, particularly those that are politically sensitive or deemed inappropriate.
Many popular international websites and platforms are blocked in China, including major social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Google services, including Gmail, are also restricted.
China is the main country where I have had to use a VPN to avoid internet censorship when travelling to access the websites I need to use for work purposes.
Russia
Russia has implemented various measures to control online content, including the blocking of websites and social media platforms that are perceived as a threat to national security or that violate certain laws. Internet service providers are required to comply with government censorship directives.
Turkey
Turkey has engaged in internet censorship, blocking access to websites, social media platforms, and online services on occasions of political unrest or events deemed sensitive. The government has also increased its control over online content in recent years.
Saudi Arabia
There are strict internet censorship laws in Saudi Arabia that restrict access to content considered offensive to religious, cultural, or political sensitivities. Websites and services promoting certain political or social views may be blocked.
Vietnam
Vietnam has implemented internet censorship to control and restrict access to content that is critical of the government or that promotes dissent. Social media platforms are also monitored and restricted.
United Arab Emirates (UAE)
The UAE, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has laws regulating internet content. Certain websites and online services may be blocked or restricted based on moral, cultural, or political considerations. Dubai is one of the most popular places to visit in the world.
Iran
Iran employs internet censorship to control and restrict access to content that is considered politically or culturally sensitive. Social media platforms, certain news websites, and content critical of the government are often blocked or restricted.
Beat The Censorship
So that is the best way to avoid internet censorship when travelling.
It’s crucial to note though that violating local internet laws can have serious consequences, including legal action. Therefore, you should exercise caution and adapt their online behaviour to comply with local regulations. Having said that just checking your Facebook, etc, on a holiday you should be fine.
