Amsterdam really is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its UNESCO World Heritage Canals to wander around. I lived in Amsterdam for quite some time, and whenever anyone asks me what they should do when visiting, my first response is to rent a bicycle and cycle around the canals.

Another good way to get around is by boat. It’s much better to get on a smaller private boat than the big tourist ones so you get a more personal experience.

You will find plenty of cafes and bars around the canals to sit down and enjoy a drink while watching everything go by. It’s one of the joys of travelling there.

This is a collection of photos I have taken over the years to show you how beautiful Amsterdam’s canals are.

Living in a houseboat is interesting and as a tourist it is possible to rent one for a short stay.

Cycling around the canals is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam.

Many of the buildings on the canals date back to 300 years ago.

A very interesting way to get around on the canals is by canoe. I haven’t tried this myself but would like to give it a go someday.

Getting out on a boat will give you a different perspective on Amsterdam.

Flowers in summertime can be seen on many of the bridges over the canals.

A very relaxing boat to get around on. What a great idea putting some couches on it for the ultimate comfort ride. You wont get that on a tourist boat.

There are plenty of party boats as well, with groups of friends getting together for a drink.

But it’s also fun with just a few mates for a more mellow cruise.

Sunny or cloudy Amsterdam’s canals are always very scenic.

Amsterdam is very scenic by night as well. Coming up to midnight you will often find yourself almost alone cycling around the canals, which is a very peaceful time to get around them.

Did you know that Amsterdam’s famous Red Light District is located in the oldest part of the city? It’s a place to party, but certainly not for those looking for some quiet.

When snow covers Amsterdam in winter the canals take on a magical appearance. Especially when it’s dark.

Sometimes in winter the canals freeze over. It’s not common for them too freeze, but when they do people get out the ice-skates and go skating on them.

Although you have to be more careful cycling around in the snow.

You can see why I think Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I never get bored going back there to visit friends whenever I am in Europe.

With my nomadic lifestyle it’s one of the few places I could almost call home.
