Ukraine celebrated independence day on Monday although a lot of the festivities lasted over the whole weekend.
Young and old hit the streets to see entertainment, dance, and generally be merry. There was a strong sense of solidarity for the people of Ukraine with the troubles currently going on in the east of the country.
Over the weekend there were military parades to give respect for the troops fighting in the east.
But the feel on Monday was one of youthful optimism and the joy for their country that they share. It’s that mood that will bring Ukraine into hopefully a peaceful and prosperous future.
The weekend was a colourful mix of blue and yellow, the colours of the flag of Ukraine.
Ukraine Independence Day
People draped themselves in their countries flag.
There were bands playing throughout the streets and larger concerts held. It’s great to see the young and old party together. It was a good day for families.
You could spend hours walking the streets coming across random things.
The youth came out in style with many dressed in traditional Ukraine clothes.
There was a few large flea markets around as well with people selling everything.
It was not just about day time celebrations as many drank into the night. In a popular student bar many young people joined in drinking games, most dressed in their traditional clothes.
Then there was the military parades over the weekend.
An elderly woman watches it all go by. I wonder what she must be thinking about her country after all she has seen over the years.
